Joseph Flummerfelt

sp11-WEB-joseph-flummerfelt-headshot-150Joseph Flummerfelt has long been recognized as one of the world's great choral conductors, and he has been an artistic leader of the Spoleto Festival USA since its founding. For twenty-three years, Flummerfelt was the Maestro del Coro for the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Italy. Choirs prepared by Flummerfelt have been featured on over 45 recordings, including Grammy Award-winning releases of Mahler's Symphony No. 3 and Samuel Barber's Antony and Cleopatra.

Flummerfelt made his conducting debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1988, and in 2001 he led the Philharmonic and the Westminster Choir in the world premiere of Stephen Paulu's Voices of Light. From 1971 to 2004 he served as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ, and in 2004 he was named Conductor of the Year by Musical America. Flummerfelt has received many honors, including the Prix du President de la Republique and a Grammy for the New York recording of John Adam's Pulitzer Prize-winning On the Transmigration of Souls, plus two additional Grammy nominations and four doctorates for his work.
